The History of Wimberley, Texas

Blanco River

In the 1850’s William Winters settled on 200 acres along Cypress Creek and the Blanco River and established a mill. Mr. Winters died in 1864 and left his property to relatives.

Pleasant Wimberley, an old friend of Mr. Winters’ from the Battle of San Jacinto, discovered the mill for sale in 1874 and bought it for $8,000 in gold.   Pleasant Wimberly moved his family to the area and ran the mill.  The mill was used for a flour mill, grist mill, sorghum mill, saw mill and a cotton gin.

The area prospered and Pleasant Wimberley was responsible for building a school and a church.  A Post Office was established in 1880 for Wimberley.

Pleasant Wimberley lived until 1919 and died at the age of 96.   Pleasant and his wife, Amanda, are laid to rest in the Wimberley Cemetery with a red Llano granite headstone that says, “FOR WHOM THE TOWN WAS NAMED”.
